Don’t Speak

Don’t speak the words in your mouth.

They are dust on the floor,

a bitter oil

slick on the tongue.

Forget them, don’t speak.

Remember the days

When the earth was young

and the children played

When the songs we sang

were beautiful and sweet

And words tasted as fresh

as the food we ate

Don’t speak those words

As the rivers run dry

As the fields are salted

with the tears we cry. . .

Don’t speak at all

Lest you bring more ruin

To this already cold

and forgotten

Tomb
